On a lakeshore in the Wisconsin's Northwoods, the native lifeway is practised as the path to balance. The students at Teaching drum outdoor school spend 11 months in a primitive camp, without cell phones, peanutbutter or even flashlights. Challenged by mosquitoes in the summer and the Cold of Winter they are trained in nature observation, survival skills and native philosophy. “I’ve learned to live completely satisfied with almost nothing, you can never learn that at university” says Travis Young, 28, bearded after five months in the Wilderness.
